Miramar National Cemetery

San Diego, CA

VDLA led a multi-disciplinary team to provide master planning, design development and construction documents for this annex to the existing Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, located on a 323-acre site on MCAS Miramar.

Site constraints include air zone use restrictions, numerous existing easements criss–crossing the site, protected and endangered habitat, and challenging topography. Major elements of the design include an administration center, several columbarium plazas, an assembly area, committal shelters, memorial areas and features, and a maintenance complex. Planting around the burial turf focuses on low water design using recycled water, with retention of existing native plantings in and around the site.

Each of these elements was planned so as to allow implementation of the design in phases to meet demand for burials while also meeting a rigorous timeline constrained by budgeting and biological restrictions.
