EDUCATION AND LIBRARIES
Mission Hills – Hillcrest / Knox Library
San Diego, CA
Awards: American Public Works Association (APWA) Award of Honor 2019: Structures
This library was an urban infill project, including a major entry courtyard and shaded inner courtyard. Design challenges included public right of way severely constrained by existing utilities, bus stop, and traffic lights, and providing landscaping on top of an underground parking garage. VDLA provided planting design, irrigation design, hardscape and garden elements at the reading garden, and construction administration services for this 15,000 square-foot library that is part of the 21st Century Library System Facility Improvements Program. The drought tolerant landscape was designed to be tough and durable, match the craftsman styling of the building, and provide a natural filtration method for storm water runoff. An intimate reading garden with a ‘green wall’ and potted plants was incorporated on the library’s interior for visitors to enjoy. The project is LEED Gold Certified.
